The All Manipur United Clubs Organization, (AMUCO)�s monitoring group on territorial integrity of Manipur, submitted a memorandum to the Samata Party national president and convenor of the National Democratic alliance, George Fernandes, MP, expressing grave concern and anguish at the Government of India reportedly toying with idea of extending the ceasefire between it and the NSCN (IM) to Manipur.
The memorandum, jointly signed by Khaidem Mani, chairman, Udoy Thongam, RK Anand and Nabashyam, all members, said the question of territorial integrity of Manipur is a matter of great concern which can only be decided by the people of the State.
�No one has the moral authority to disturb Manipur which as a population of 24 lakhs consisting of 31 indigenous groups of people who are living together in this part of the world since time memorial.� It noted that the prime concern of a democratic government is the welfare and public tranquility and the government of India should pay heed to this.
The question of extension of the ceasefire to Manipur definitely involves the well being of the lives of the 24 lakhs people, and no amount of security coverage may be able to guarantee them safety in such a circumstance, the memorandum said.
It further said that primary concern of the monitoring group is the well being of the people and tranquility in Manipur and cautioned the government of India from taking any hasty, unconsidered steps.
