Imphal, April 03 2012:
With the water level of the Loktak Lake receding due to the present dry spell, Manipur's share of power generated by the Loktak hydro Power Project has completely dissipated.
Chief Engineer (Power) N Sarat informed The Sangai Express that the Power Project at present can barely generate 1 megawatt or less power due to the low water level of Loktak Lake consequently resulting in the State either receiving minimal or no power at all.
Conceding that problem of power supply in Manipur has gone from bad to worse, the Chief Engineer also said there is no sign for improvement in the situation in the next few days as electricity allocation from other States had been erratic.
During a random study in the capital areas, it came to light that most households and commercial establishments are depending on generators to sustain normal chores with the situation most vivid at the State Secretariat where a large generator is being run to ensure the administrative hub remains functional.
On the brighter side, information has been received that official process is underway to acquire the entire 66 megawatt generated by the Loktak Downstream Project, which is a joint venture of the State Govt and NHPC.
