Man dies in hit & run case, JAC protests

Imphal, March 17 2023:
A 67-year-old man lost his life in a hit and run case that occurred on Thursday near Kheba Ching exit of NH 102 (Imphal-Moreh highway) under Khongjom police station, Thoubal district.
The victim has been identified as Laishram Tampha, son of late Chabungba of Heirok Part 1 Mamang Leikai, Thoubal district.
Meanwhile, a public meeting was held on Friday during which people of the victim's village formed a JAC.
The meeting was followed by a sit-in protest demanding swift investigation into the incident and booking the person responsible.
JAC president Laishram Jadumani told media persons at the protest site that the fateful incident occurred when the victim was riding a bicycle to go to Khongjom to get materials for making Pung (traditional drum) .
Khongjom police team found him lying injured on the roadside after the incident and took him to Thoubal district hospital.
His family members came across the report on social media and went to the hospital.
Doctors at the district hospital advised them to take the victim to Imphal.
However, he succumbed to injuries when they were making arrangements, he said.
Meanwhile, the JAC along with the public demanded the government to investigate the incident and arrest the person(s) involved by Sunday.
They resolved not to claim the body until the demand is met.
The body is now lying at JNIMS mortuary.
