Govt to activate Loktak Lift irrigation system

As part of the steps taken up to ease water scarcity problem in Imphal areas, the government has decided to make functional the Loktak Lift Irrigation system so that water from Loktak lake could be brought till Malom and make it available to the people.
This was disclosed by chief minister N Biren Singh during a press conference held late Friday evening at his secretariat office, here.
In his reply to a query raised by media persons regarding water scarcity problem in Imphal area, CM Biren said that water from Loktak lake will be delivered till Malom through Loktak Lift Irrigation system from March 20 onwards and the pumped water will be distributed to the people.
To make this happen, three ministers Govindas Konthoujam (works), Awangbow Newmai (water resources) and L Susin-dro (PHE) along with officials of departments concerned conducted inspection of the Loktak Lift Irrigation system on Friday.
Earlier in the day, Water Resources and Relief & Disaster Management minister Awangbow Newmai along with PHE and CAF & PD minister L Susindro, Works and Youth Affairs & Sports minister Govindas Konthoujam and Education, Law & Legislative Affairs minister Th Basantaku-mar Singh on Friday inspected the canals in Heigrujam and Oinam village area.
Speaking on the sidelines, minister Awangbow informed that in view of drying up of Singda Dam the inspection was car'ried out in an effort to find a temporary as well as long-term solution to the water crisis situation in Manipur.
The minister also said that since potable water cannot be supplied in Imphal area as most of the rivers have nearly dried up the only alternative left is to feed the Chingkhei Ching water treatment plant with water from reservoir of the Thoubal multipurpose project to address the problem of shortage of potable water in Imphal area.
He also informed that water will be lifted from the Loktak Lift Irrigation system and supplied to Imphal area as an alternative solution.
The ministerial team was also accompanied by officials and staff members of the departments concerned.
