MPCC stages district wide hunger strike

Supporting the cause of the STs and SCs particularly Dalits, the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) under the direction of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) organised hunger strikes at different districts of the State today endorsing the nationwide fast of the Congress party.
Sit-in protests were staged in Bishnupur, Thoubal and Kakching showing solidarity towards Dalits.
Placards that read 'We are all Indians', 'We are One', 'Constitution Protects All', 'We stand for weaker section', 'INC Stands for protection of all Indians', 'Save Democracy', 'Stop killing of innocent protesters', and 'Maintain Communal Harmony' were displayed during the protests.
It may be mentioned that on April 2, millions of Dalits took to the streets to protest the alleged dilution of SCs/STs (Prevention of Atrocities) Act by a Supreme Court order.
Six Dalits were killed in a violence that erupted during the protest (Bharat Bandh), NDTV reported.
Bishnupur District Congress Committee, block Congress committees, Youth Congress and Mahila Congress Committee Bishnupur organised a sit-in protest at Nambol Sabal Leikai Public Hall, Nambol, Bishnupur.
President of Bishnupur District Congress Committee Kh Ranbir Singh, MLA Bishnupur AC and member of AICC Govindas Konthoujam, Nambol AC MLA and vice president of MPCC N Loken Singh, Ex MLA and member of MPCC M Prithviraj Singh, Ex MLA, member of MPCC Dr I Ibohalbi Singh, Chairperson Bishnupur Municipal Council Kh Maniyaima Singh, member MPCC Kh Amita Singh and a number of workers and supporters from six blocks took part in the sit-in protest.
Speaking to media persons, Govindas Konthoujam said that the AICC condemns any atrocities towards the weaker sections of the society.
"Even though Manipur has no caste such as Dalit, we condemn any inferiority treatment towards them or any other weaker sections of the people," he said.
In Thoubal, 32 Wangkhem AC, MLA (who is also the general secretary of MPCC and a member of AICC) Keishsam Meghachandra led the protest at Mela Ground organised by the Thoubal District Congress Committee.
Kakching District Congress Committee staged the sit-in protest today at Hiyanglam Lai Panganba Market shed.
Sugnu AC MLA K Ranjit, Wabagai AC MLA Md Fajur Rahim, president of Kakching District Congress Committee E Manglemba, MPCC member Naorem Kobit, workers and supporters from Sugnu, Kakching, Wabagai and Hiyanglam took part in the protest.
The DCC Churachandpur also joined the party's nation wide fast to protest the Government's alleged failure to address key issues like rising atrocities against Dalits, the dilution of SC/ST Act, the CBSE exam paper leak, the multi crore bank scams and more.
The fast held at Tuibong community hall was attended by Lalngeta, president CDC; PCC Members T Manga Vaiphei, Mangcha Thangjom, Dr Chinkholal Thangsing and party functionaries at the block level as well as from Mahila groups.
The Congress Party, through it's policies, has always promoted the values of peace and harmony however under the Modi Government, atrocities against Dalits, Tribals, Muslims, and various other sections are on the rise with their rights constantly undermined, said a party functionary at the fast venue.
It was the inaction of the Government that led to their protest, he added.
