State Handloom Expo 2022 begins

State Handloom Expo 2022 organised by Manipur Handloom & Handicrafts Development Corporation Limited (MHHDCL commenced from Sunday at Urban Haat, Nilakuthi.
The opening function of the Expo was attended by MHHDCL chairman MLA Kh Ibomcha as chief guest, managing director E Jeeten as president and Union Ministry of Textiles Weavers' Service Centre deputy director K Baro as guest of honour.
Speaking on the occasion, Kh Ibomcha informed that with an aim to preserve various hand loom and handicraft products of the state, the government has registered Geographical Indication (GI) tag for items like, 'Moirang Phee', 'Shaphee Lanphee' and 'Wangkhei Phee' .
He then assured to do his best to ensure that other state handlooms and handicraft products also receive GI tags.
Kh Ibomcha mentioned that after agriculture, the handloom sector is the second most income and employment generation avenue of the state, be it in the hills or the valley area.
Hence, the sector needs to be further developed considering its importance, he stressed.
Noting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and chief minister N Biren have taken up various schemes for the welfare of the people of the country and state, he urged the two leaders to launch more such schemes for development of handloom and handicrafts industry.
The MLA also expressed his regret that many weavers have not received their dues from previous year's exhibitions, whileassuring that he will press the chief minister for release of the due payments at the earliest.
