Earthquake mock drill in IE, Thoubal today

Earthquake mock exercise is highly needed in state like Manipur which comes under the seismic zone, said KM Singh, member, National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) .
NDMA is now all prepared to inculcate and spread alertness among people on disaster management under the name Mega Earthquake Mock Exercise.
The drill would be conducted at five locations each in Imphal East and Thoubal districts tomorrow.
Personnel from the Fire Service, Manipur Police and Home Guard would be taking part in the mock drill, informed KM Singh, member, NDMA on Wednesday.

Such an exercise inculcating alertness among people on seismic activity is a must for the Northeast which is included in the seismic zone, he said.
He further said the exercise largely aims to spread awareness on basic preventive measures to be taken up by people during major natural calamities like quake, fire and flood.
Thoubal district has a population of around 8, 20, 517 while Imphal East has 8, 52, 661, he said and added that in the event of a major quake in Thoubal it is estimated that nearly 8, 800 lives may lose and 5, 100 in the Imphal East, he said.
"We must know how to take up rescue works to save lives when quake strikes," he added.
