Imphal, May 10 2021:
Following its defeat in Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and West Bengal elections, Indian National Congress (INC) held a meeting of Congress Working Committee (CWC), its highest decision-making body, on Monday.
Former deputy chief minister Gaikhangnam attended the meeting which was conducted via video conference, wherein he also expressed his opinion on the steps AICC needed to be taken up.
Presiding over the meeting, AICC interim president Sonia Gandhi said that the party's defeat and poor performance in the recent polls was disheartening.
The party needs to carefully find out the reason for its defeat and properly organise the party while further assessing why it fell short of its own expectations.
The interim president also sought a report on why small groups/factions were formed and the various faults committed on all fronts during the polls.
During the meeting, discussions were also held on the election of a new party president.
Previously, the party had fixed June 23 for holding election to elect a new party president.
However, many senior leaders had objected to the same.
The election date presently remains postponed due to the pandemic.
Mention may be made here that over the past one year, senior leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, Anand Sharma, Shashi Tharoor and Kapil Sibal had opined that a 'full time and effective leadership' would help strengthen the party.
It may be noted that Congress was able to open an account in the Bengal polls despite working together with the left party.
In Assam, it won only 29 seats, 41 in Kerala and 2 in Pondicherry.
In Tamil Nadu, despite being in an alliance with DMK, it won only 18 seats out of 25 contested seats.
