The Communist Party of India Manipur State Council (CPI-MSC) has opined that it is high time the State Government take appropriate measures to safeguard the Koubru Reserve Forest and Kangpokpi-Kanglatongbi Reserve Forest Areas.
Though the said areas which have been recorded as Reserve Forest as per an order issued in 1968 under Indian Forest Act 1927, these areas have not only witnessed wide deforestation but also establishment of settlement areas within it over the years, the CPI-MSC said in a press release.
As such the Government should not remain content over some records stating these reserve forest areas are still intact, it said and urged the authorities concerned to take up proper measures before these areas got disappeared.
The State Government should go by its words and take up actions against those who are responsible for clearance of trees from within these reserved forest areas including Mount Koubru.
The landslide at a portion along NH2 yesterday way before the onset of the monsoon clearly depicts the poor state of the hill areas where influential persons carried out unchecked excavation and clearance of trees, it continued.
If such activities are not curbed, forest areas Will disappear shortly and Manipur will no longer be a hilly State, it said while calling on the State Government to strictly enforce laws in the State.
