Campaign for legal aid to women inmates underway

As per a direction of National Legal Services Authority, Manipur State Legal Services Authority (MASLS A) in assoc iation with District Legal Services Authorities is organising a ten-day longcampaignfor enhancing legal services to women inmates and their accompanying children inpri sons at Manipur Central Jail from May 17.The inaugural function of the campaign was attended by Chairman/ Secretaries of District Legal Services Authorities, Ojesh Mutum, Addl Member Secretary, ATarunakumariDevi, Deputy Member Secretary, MASLSA, A Kunjakeshor Singh, Superintendent Manipur Central Jail, Imphal, officials of thejail, panel lawyers, Para Legal Volunteers and the in mates of the Jail.
M Manojkumar Singh, Chairman, Imphal West District Legal Services Authority gave a speechhighlightingtheobjective of the campaign to the inmates.
Theobjective ofthe campaign is to make womenprisoners aware about their rights and also the functioning of the legal services institutions, securing the rights of pregnant women prisoners, ensuring treatment of women prisoners suffering from mental illness and depression, facilitating women prisoners access to educational and vocational skills, actualization of health, educational and recreational needs of children and facilitating preparation of identity documents of children living with theirmothfers in jails.
- During the campaign, a number cff activities will be conducted, such as identification of women inmates with legal need and provide legal aid.

A number of awareness programmes will also be held on the topics "Maintaining Personal Hygiene for Woman Inmates".
"Securing Mental Stability for Jail Inmates", "Preventing Communicable Diseases".
"Nutritional/ Dietary Requirements of Women including Children Living with Them".
"Educational and Vocational Skills in Jails" and "Beneficial Scheme for Women and Children" .
Saying that media plays a valuable role in spreading information, awareness and attracting the people, Manipur State Legal Services Authority expressed hope that media would continue to render such services in future also.
