MP team to assess project

A Parliamentary panel would arrive here tomorrow and assess pro-gress report of the Jiribam-Tupul-Imphal railway project.
They may also quiz officials concerned for initiating the project without first obtaining environmental clearance.
A team of the Parliament's Estimate Committee headed by MP Francisco Sardinha as chairman would come tomorrow and collect a report of the railway project which has been already declared as a na-tional project, informed an official source.
The team comprises of 12 MPs and they include BJP MP Vijay Chakravarty and Manipur MP Th Meinya.
The team would hold a meeting at Classic Hotel on September 30 with officials of the Northern Frontier Railway, State Transport Depart- ment and Forest Department and obtain a report on the railway project.
The committee would obtain a detail report about the planning, implementation and performance from the Northern Frontier Railways regar- ding the Jiribam-Tupul-Imphal railway project.
At present, tunnelling work has been going on after railway track was constructed and trial run conducted from Jiribam to Dolakhal.
The committee may also quiz relevant officials for initiating the project without first obtaining forest clearance.
Notably, the project affects 491.67 hectares of forest land which fall under the jurisdictions of DFO Tamenglong, DFO Jiribam and DFO Northern Forest Division.
The issue of not obtaining environmental clearance for the railway project would be deliberated in another meeting scheduled tomorrow where the Chief Minister, the Chief Secretary and other relevant officials would be present.
It is reported that the visiting committee would discuss with concerned State officials for promotion of textile industry in Manipur.
The MPs after arrival at Imphal tomorrow would visit Loktak Lake, Govindaji temple and Ima Keithel.
