UNC presents Nagas' case to Ashok Prasad

Imphal, September 22 2015: The United Naga Council (UNC) leaders met Ashok Prasad, Special Secretary, Internal Security, Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Government of India during his visit to the State at Imphal and strongly urged him to immediately intervene on the 'rejected Bills' and resolutions passed by the Manipur Legislative Assembly on August 31 and submitted a representation.

In a statement, the general secretary of UNC, S Milan said that the Naga tribals and the Meitei kingdom hardly share a common origin, history, identity, culture, tradition and time honoured institutions.

"The Nagas had been living in a village republic free from internal and external forces since time immemorial.

Our land is unique and only the Nagas with a few other communities except the Meiteis of the valley live in Nagalim.

We have been made a part of Manipur not through the conquest of Meitei Maharajah or by our consent," it said.

The UNC further said that the present situation being created at Churachandpur district Hqtrs in which 9 innocent civilians including a minor were killed on August 31 and September 1 by the State security forces consequent upon the passing of the most controversial anti- tribal Bills and Resolutions by the Manipur State Assembly on August 31 while defending tribal rights is nothing but a deliberate attempt of the 'communal Government of Manipur' to suppress, oppress and exploit tribal rights and to grab their land.

The 'communal State forces' used rubber bullets for the valley protesters while live bullets were used against the peaceful loving and democratic tribal protesters in tribal hill areas, the UNC pointed out.

The UNC urged Ashok Prasad to kindly take up all possible steps to expedite historic Indo-Naga Framework Accord to its logical conclusion at the earliest as it is 'impossible to live together with dignity and honour under the communal Government of Manipur' .
