Kakching erupts in protest after mishap claims young boy

Kakching, January 15 2018:
A huge public protest erupted at Kakching after an 18 year old individual identified as Khumukcham Jetlee s/o Kh Mangi of Kakching Khullel Moirangthem Leikai was killed after he was knocked down by a Swift Dzire car near Heikrakpokpi power substation along National Highway 102 (Imphal-Moreh road), Kakching district, at around 9.3 0 pm yesterday.
According to reliable information, the victim along with one of his friends were returning home from Koraopokpi, when their scooter broke down.
They were on their way, pushing the broken down scooter when all of a sudden a Swift Dzire car coming towards Pallel struck Jetlee before crashing into a nearby shop.
According to the friend, Basker, the car had a name plate bearing an Ashoka Chakra above two crossed swords and also had Indian Army written on it.
Basker claimed that his friend Jetlee laid motionless on the road side after he was struck down by the car and on seeing the condition, the owners of the vehicles which was coming after the involved car, offered to rush the victim to the hospital.
He said that during that time, one of the occupants of the Swift car came out and tried to thrash him but another occupant of the said vehicle came and restrained the individual.
However, on seeing the condition of the accident victim, the said individuals got into their car and sped off towards Pallel, he claimed.
On the other hand, the family members of the deceased as well as the locals have urged the authority concerned to take up necessary actions to book the culprits.
The irate locals tried to storm Kakching police station today, demanding justice for the deceased and the police had to resort to firing tear gas shells and mock bombs to disperse the crowd.
Later the police also foiled an attempt by the locals to organise a public meeting regarding the incident.
According to reports, the police had to fire several tear gas rounds to try and disperse the large number of people some of whom even retaliated by throwing stones at the police.
