Paraolon ambush : 11 days remand for KYKL cadre

Special Court NIA Manipur, remanded N Premkanta, the wanted KYKL cadre, to an extra 11 days police custody today, in connection with the Paraolon ambush case.
N Premkanta (32) s/o N Ibomcha of Kakching Irum Mapan, has been undergoing three days remand in police custody before he was produced before the Court by an NIA team today.
The NIA filed an application through their counsel , Agency Investigating Officer (AIO) Sushil Kumar Pandey, praying for 15 days police custody remand of the accused, including the three days custody remand which was granted by the Duty Magistrate till today.
The NIA, through their counsel, submitted that further police remand of the accused is necessary as he is directly involved in executing the ambush on security personnel on June 4, 2015 .
The NIA submitted that N Premkanta personally took part in laying the ambush and stressed on the importance of carrying out an in-depth examination of the accused.
NIA further submitted that during the initial custodial examination, the accused already divulged many incriminating details regarding the conceptualisation of the plan by leaders of various banned organisations at different parts of the country, as well as the execution of the ambush in which 18 army personnel of 6th Dogra Battalion lost their lives and 15 were seriously injuries.
It submitted that further investigation is necessary and the accused need to be taken to various locations around the country for the investigation thus necessitating the 15 days police custody remand.
The Court heard the Special PP (NIA) and went through the records and granted the application filed by the AIO.
The Court remanded the accused to further 11 days in police custody till January 25 and also directed the AIO of the case to provide necessary medical treatment to the accused while he is in police custody.
It may be recalled that N Premkanta was arrested by a joint team of State police and the NIA on January 12, at around 3 pm, from Wangkhei Andro parking along with the recovery of a pistol and five live bullet rounds.
It may be mentioned that after the deadly attack of June 4, 2015, which claimed the lives of 18 army personnel, the Ministry of Home Affairs handed over the investigation of the case to NIA on June 6, the same year.
The next day, an NIA team launched necessary investigations by visiting the incident site and other locations.
During the investigation, NIA held that the ambush was laid by a joint UG group and named 17 individuals belonging to various UG outfits.
After going through Court's procedures, the 17 individuals were later announced as proclaimed offenders in connection with the case, including N Premkanta.
It may be mentioned a separate NIA trial in connection with the Paraolon ambush is currently underway against alleged former self style chairman of Amamchat region, Khumlo Abi Anal.
Khumlo Abi Anal alias Ambition Anal of Lambung village, Chandel, was arrested by an NIA team, soon after the agency took up the case, from Lamphel Sanakeithel and is presently in judicial custody at Sajiwa Central Jail.
NIA Guwahati submitted a charge sheet in connection with the case before the Court on December 19, 2015, with a list of 65 prosecution witnesses.
More than six prosecution witnesses have given their statement before the Court including the Resident Medical Officer of 6th Dogra Battalion, the then OC Tengnoupal, the then SDPO of Moreh and some personnel of 6th Battalion Dogra Regiment.
