Imphal, February 04 2013:
Assam Rifles today claimed it 'has been able to bring an active group of CorCom to the peace table' .
In a statement made available to the media under the caption 'Blow to CorCom', PRO IGAR (S) said that the final curtain to the long ongoing negotiations which started in the month of November 2012 with the UPPK was brought down today with 45 cadres and an array of weapons walking into the folds of peace process initiated by the Assam Rifles.
"The negotiations with the top leadership started in the month of Novemver, 2012 when important leaders of the outfit including chairman of UPPK were extricated from various places and brought to Manipur to initiate peace process in the State.
As a demonstration of the trust and confidence in Assam Rifles, the entire group walked into the folds of peace with a strength of 45 cadres, 36 weapons with other war like stores.

It is evident from this action that the strategy of IGAR (South) to bring peace by winning hearts and mind has paid amazing dividends and insurgents have given up arms voluntarily thus signifying that people of the State abhor violence and are desirous of leading a peaceful life.
With Manipur facing the scourge of terrorism for decades, it is the general public who bear the brunt of the problems due to the presence of such militant outfits which indulge in senseless killings, extortion and anti social activity by the groups under the umbrella of CorCom.
UPPK coming out of the umbrella body of CorCom and choosing to enter into peace talks has far reaching implications and will open a floodgate for other cadres and even the insurgent groups based across who now stand emboldened to follow what their heart desires.
All possible pre-requisite was assured and provided by the State Govt, which led to successful negotiation with UPPK," the PRO said.
"This act of bulk of UPPK cadre coming out of CorCom and out of shadow of insurgency best illustrates the efficacy of humane strategy adopted by the IGAR(S)", the PRO added.
"It is pertinent here to mention that while the effort of Maj Gen UK Gurung,YSM were recognized by the defence hierarchy recently by awarding him AVSM (Ati Vishisth Seva Medal) for his service in Manipur, people of Manipur have bestowed the biggest reward by facilitating an entire group to walk the path of peace so vociferously advocated by the officer," the PRO claimed.
