Imphal, February 04 2013:
In all, 21 cadres including four female cadres of the proscribed United People's Party of Kangleipak (UPPK), which has been recently expelled from CorCom, fled from their camp in Myanmar last midnight.
Interestingly, the incident has come about a day after the Central Committee of the proscribed outfit issued a statement to the media asserting that it would never enter into peace talks with the Government of India or compromise with its revolutionary principles under any circumstances.
According to a highly placed police source, the 21 fleeing UPPK cadres, all heavily armed, had earlier contacted Dr AK Jhalajit, SP of Thoubal Police informing about their intention of coming out from their camp and requested for receiving them at Moreh.
Accordingly, the information was conveyed to the top officials of the Manipur Police and a team of Manipur Police Commando led by OC Sudhir of Thoubal District Police Commando landed at Moreh yesterday evening.
The team of Manipur Police Commandos met the escaped UPPK cadres in the wee hours today and made necessary arrangement for bringing them to Imphal.
Just as the team was about to start for Imphal, a team of AR under 9-Sector stationed at Moreh arrived and took into custody of all the 21 UPPK cadres from the hands of Manipur Police Commandos.
When the news of the incident reached his ears, DGP Y Joykumar made a complaint to the CM and the Home Minister.
The Chief Minister, while expressing serious concern over the conduct of the Assam Rifles, assured top officials of the Manipur police Department that the issue would be brought up to the level of the Union Home Minister, informed the source.
The source further said that whether the motive behind the escape of 21 UPPK cadres with huge cache of arms and ammunitions from their camp was to lay down arms or for possible peace talks with the Government of India is still not known.
However, another source revealed that the top cadres of UPPK, who are presently lodged in the jail, have already agreed for a peace talk with the Government of India.
As such, the escape of 21 UPPK cadres from their camp in Myanmar is certainly related to the peace process.
It is said that most of the cadres who escaped from their camp in Myanmar belong to the Central Committee of UPPK and their names have been mentioned in the statement released to media yesterday by UPPK.
The escape team of UPPK cadres was led by Mayengbam Kanthou (Lieutenant Colonel) of Wabgai, who is said to be the Chief of Staff of UPPK.
The other cadres included Deputy Organisation (Lieutenant) L Lakpa of Kwakeithel Konjeng Leikai; Deputy Finance Huidrom Poirei of Langthabal; (Major) Laishram Bolyof Khongman Okram Chuthek; Publicity Officer (Major) America of Thongju; (Captain) Yaima of Langthabal,(Captain) Kabikhomba of Wabgai Hiyanglam and (Sergeant) Anand of Thangmeiband.
The source also revealed that the four female cadres joined UPPK two months back and they are minors.
