Imphal, July 24 2021:
Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) has submitted a memorandum to the education minister, the Commissioner of Department of University and Higher Education and the Director of Directorate of Education (U) urging for improving the collegiate education in the state.
Addressing a press meet at its office on Saturday, DESAM general secretary Leishangthem Lamyanba said that the promotion given to Class XII students has lead to seat explosion in some colleges, which could possibly create issues for many students in getting a seat in their preferred colleges.
To prevent this, the government first needs to take up all necessary steps including rationalisation of the number of students and teachers i.e., making the student-teacher ratio uniform.
The rationalisation process must also include the non-teaching staff and librarians, he added.
"Secondly, the government should appoint regular principal for colleges, considering only 15 colleges have regular principals with tenure of 5 years, and while 24 other colleges along with 6 aided colleges do not have regular principals.
Amid this, there are some principal in-charges who have been holding onto the post for over 23 years, which shows the lack of authority for many colleges", he remarked.
Lamyanba continued that various funds under different schemes of UGC and RUSA have been either put on hold or annulled.
The two suggestions provided by DESAM will help in reviving and improving the quality of the higher education of the state for a long time.
Thus, he urged the government to implement the suggestions into action ahead of the commencement of college admissions.
