Gold worth Rs 4 Cr seized

Imphal, March 10 2018:
A joint team of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) and 12 Assam Rifles of 26 Sector Assam Rifles under the aegis of IGAR (South), apprehended a gold smuggler along with 97 gold bars weighing around 16.045 kgs worth around Rs 4,8135 crore, at Khudengthabi check post yesterday.
According to a press release issued by the Senior Intelligence Officer of the DRI as well as another statement issued by the PRO of Assam Rifles, the joint team stopped a silver colour Maruti Omni van bearing registration number (MN01-AK-1912), which was travelling from Moreh towards Imphal, at Khudengthabi check post.
While searching the passengers and vehicle, the joint team found the gold biscuits hidden inside a secret cavity of the vehicle chassis.
The individual along with the gold bars were later handed over to DRI, Imphal.
DRI is the lead agency for combating cross border crime involving smuggling of gold, consumer goods, drugs and narcotics, wild life articles, fake Indian currency notes and counterfeit goods, import-export frauds and trade based money laundering.
From April 1, 2017, till date, DRI has seized close to 300 kgs of gold (valued at around Rs 90 crore) smuggled from Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nepal and even Bhutan, in the region spread over West Bengal and the North Eastern States.
