Prof.N Mohendro, Chairman of Academic Advisory Committee, Institute of Cooperative Management, (ICM) Imphal said that there are around 5700-5800 cooperative societies in the state, however out of them 48% of them are failed.
Mohendro, who attended a day-long seminar on 'Cooperative crossroads in Manipur' organised by ICM at its Lamphelpat Conference Hall on Saturday as Guests of Honour, said that work culture is backbone of cooperative societies and its meaningless if there is no cooperative activities in the society.
Chief Guest of the inaugural function, Thaithuilung Pamei (IAS), Registrar of Cooperative Societies, Government of Manipur, said that cooperative societies are becoming more and more relevant in the development of socio-economic condition of present Manipur.
Stating that the question of cooperative movement is the question of state's existence, Thaithuilung pointed out that there is a clear sign of eroding work-culture among the people of Manipur and it becoming one of the main factors for social unrest in the State.
However, if the educated people especially youths are involved cooperative movement, we can come up with innovative and effective techniques to accelerate the movement of cooperative and to bring long-lasting harmony in the state, he suggested.
Jeena Potsangbam, Chairperson, NCUI-Project Coordination Committee, Manipur, who also attended the inaugural function of the seminar as Guest of Honor, pointed out that some of the destitute widows have resorted to work as commercial sex workers in their struggle for survival.
IN such a situation, if the concerned authorities provide space to these destitute women for setting up cooperative societies, it would not only help in rehabilitating them but also create an impetus to the social economy.
