Imphal, August 05 2013:
Manipur Director General of Police (DGP) Y Joykumar has instructed Superintendents of Police of Imphal East and Tamenglong districts to completely stop movement of heavy vehicles along National Highway-37, also known as Imphal-Silchar road or Imphal-Jiribam road with immediate effect after traffic on a 35 km long section of the route suddenly became inaccessible.
The DGP has given the instruction following Border Roads Organisation (BRO) apprised the state Government in a letter three days ago about the deplorable condition of the NH-37 section from Keimai to Nungba which needs repairing, official sources said Monday.
All loaded vehicles including oil tankers have been taking the Imphal-Jiribam road since a heavy landslide occurred at Nagaland's Phesema along National Highway-2 (Imphal-Dimapur road) on July 12 last that resulted in stoppage of flow of traffic on this route.
The increased number of heavy vehicles plying on the route resulted in the deterioration of the section that now no heavy vehicle can pass through it until it is repaired, the sources said.
The road repairing work to be taken up on the section would be finished within five-seven days, the BRO assured the state Government in the letter.
Meanwhile, at least two goods laden trucks are now stranded at Sibilong village which is located between Keimai and Nungba in Tamenglong district.
