Imphal, August 05 2013:
Reacting against destruction of houses constructed on agricultural lands in Chingmeirong Laipham Khunnou (Siphai) Loukon yesterday by volunteers of Loupham Kanba Lup, a sit-n-protest was staged at Paomei Colony today.
The protest demonstration was held under the aegis of Land Owner Protection Committee (LOPC) .
Speaking to media on the sidelines of the protest demonstration, Sani Alexander, Convener of LOPC, pointed out that Paomei Colony is inhabited by tribals from the hill districts of the State after they bought land there for the last 50 years and more.
They have come down and settled in this place not to engage in agricultural activities but to construct houses for settlement.
Now they have pattas of the lands in their possession.
So, it is really unfortunate for others to interfere in their personal matter, he said.
"It is our right to make whatever use of our land in our own way, no individual has the right to tell us what to do and what not to do with the land", Alexander asserted.
The manner in which the houses constructed in Paomei Colony were destroyed by some locals of Laipham Khunnou yesterday was really unfortunate and if this continues, unwanted incidents might happen, he warned.
Since the DC and the SP of Imphal East district have not paid any attention to this issue, a complaint has been made to the Chief Minister and the Home Minister.
If nothing positive comes up even after filing of the complaint, the affected residents would be forced to consult the ANSAM and UNC and take up intense actions, Alexander added.
