Workshop on State Action Plan on Climate Change held

Directorate of Environment, today organised a two day workshop on State Action Plan on Climate Change at the premises of Trade Centre, Moreh, Tengnoupal district.
The workshop started today at Moreh under the theme "Empowering jhumis with secure livelihood: A challenge of Economical Governance" aimed at inclusion of the demands and wants of the jhum cultivators/farmers in the new action plan.
ADC Moreh N Bankim and former member of NER Doner Prof N Mohendro, attended the workshop as chief guest and president respectively.
Tengnoupal district has a total population of about 1.6 lakh.
About 600 households in the district adopted Jhum cultivation.
Experts at the workshop emphasised on the negative impacts of jhum cultivation on climate change and explained alternate means of earning livelihoods.
Professor Amar Yumnam of MU Economics Department, Deputy Director of Directorate of Environment Dr T Brajakumar and others spoke at the event as experts.
Editor of Sangai Express Manipuri Edition Khogendro Khomdram, president of Editor Guild A Mobi, Telegraph Imphal correspondent Khelen Thokchom and Assam Tribune Imphal correspondent Sobhapati Samom attended the event as panellists.
A panel discussion with media persons, officials of concerned department and Tengnoupal DC Kh Raghumani will be held tomorrow on the second and last day of the workshop.
The discussion will draw various recommendations from all the stakeholders which may be added to the existing State Action Plan on Climate Change.
The State Action Plan on Climate Change was formulated in the year 2013.The workshop is scheduled to be held in all the districts of State.
