Medical negligence: Public meet decides to invite UN Spl Rapporteur on Health

In the wake of increasing incidents of medical negligence resulting to unnatural deaths of several women in the hospitals of Manipur, a meeting of various civil organizations, meira paibis, women activists and citizens of Manipur was held at the community hall of Langol Type-II here today.
The meeting organised by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) against the Unnatural Death of Wangkhem Eliza, resolved to demand setting up of a Judicial Inquiry Commission to investigate all the incidents of the unnatural deaths in both public and private hospitals due to alleged medical negligence at the earliest.
While deciding to demand subsequent booking of errant doctors under relevant laws to meet the ends of justice, the gathering also resolved to press the government to carry out medical audit of all the government and private hospitals in Manipur to ensure that doctors and other medical staff execute their duties diligently.
Decrying the indifferent attitude of the concerned authority towards cases of medical negligence, the meeting insisted to invite the UN Special Rapporteur on Health to visit India at the earliest in order to observe the overall functioning of health system particularly in Manipur.
It also decided to pursue the concerned authority to provide compensation to all the victim families after establishing the facts.
It may be recalled that a young woman named Thokchom Ongbi Priyari Devi (40) of Kwakeithel Heinoukhongnembi passed away after giving birth to a girl child at RIMS, while another woman Aheibam Bijeta (25) died after she was given anaesthesia for a Caesarean operation at RIMS.
Both K.Devjani (33) and Irengbam Sandhyarani (25) expired after delivery, while Keisham Ongbi Soni Devi (23) w/o Sundarjit of Wabagai Thingel Leikai in Thoubal district died before delivery at JNIMS.
In alleged cases of medical negligence, Leimapokpam Roma (34) of Kiyamgei passed away at JNIMS and Wangkhem Eliza (31) of Langol Ningthou died due to apathy of doctors.
Very recently, Tombimacha (66), w/o Pishak of Tentha Khunou Awang Leikai, fell victim of medical negligence for a long time before she defecated a three feet long bandage in post operations period.
