Works minister inspects Ukhrul road, Shirui Fest venues

Imphal, May 23 2022: Works minister Govindas Konthoujam on Monday visited Ukhrul and inspected Imphal-Ukhrul road as well as the venues for the upcoming Shirui Lily Festival 2022.During his visit, Govindas said that the government will hold review meeting on the road projects in the state along with PWD, National Highways Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), rural engineering department and DCs on 15th of every month in order to expedite the progress of the projects and to ensure quality maintenance.

Accompanied by Festival Committee chairman and Ukhrul MLA Ram Muivah, works commissioner T Ranjit and PWD chief engineer Kh Temba, the minister also inspected the festival venues including Shirui foothills, Bakshi ground, and Tangkhul Naga Long ground where helipads are being developed.

Interacting with the media, the minister said that preparations for the festival including road repair works were affected for some days due to incessant heavy rainfall.

However, the weather condition has improved in the last couple of days and he is hopeful of having a fine weather during the festival.

Unfortunately, visitors might face some inconvenience due to bad road condition even though the government is putting every effort to address those issues, he maintained.

Govindas appealed to the chiefs and residents of Shirui and nearby villages to protect the forest cover in the area as deforestation leads to drastic climate change and it might affect the natural habitat of Shirui Lily.

There will be no Shirui Lily festival if the flower no longer blooms due to climate change, he pointed out and also called upon the people of the district as well as the state to contribute towards promoting the festival to the global audience so as to attract more visitors.

The Imphal-Ukhrul road project faced some hurdles in Finch corner and Mahadev area owning to some issues on land acquisition.

However, the issues have been resolved after the chief minister spoke with the representatives of the nearby villagers, he said.

Pointing out that land owners do not claim compensation for the road projects in Nagaland, the minister urged the people of the state to cooperate with the government and not to demand unreasonably high land compensation.
