Court registers special trial; charge nearing on May 26

Imphal, May 23 2022:
The Sessions Judge, Imphal East on Monday registered a special trial case and issued notices to nine state police personnel and fixed May 26 for charge hearing on the alleged fake encounter killing of Elangbam Kiranjit by a combined team of Thoubal police commando and 23 Assam Rifle on May 24, 2009 .
As per the case dossier, the special trial case has been registered against then Jemadar of Thoubal police commando Hollal Haokip (46) son of Tongkholum Haokip of Moreh Ward number 7; then Havildar 1MR attached to Thoubal commando Kameidun Kamei James (38) son of Ibohal of Keikhu Kabui village; then Rifleman 2nd IRB attached to Thoubal commando Laisham Basanta (41) son of Birsing of Pangei Yangdong; then Rifleman of 1st MR attached to Thoubal commando Shawaijam Naba (41) son of late Keshori of Kakching Wairi Thongam Leikai; the then Rifleman of 3rd IRB attached to Thoubal commando Darsmol Sankhil Lamkhang (41) son of Bhardamal of Thamal Khu-rem village; then Rifleman of 3rd IRB attached to Thoubal commando Tombing Thangsiamlal Paite (39) son of late Khamzachin of New Lamka Dorcas Veng; then Rifleman of 2nd MR attached to Thoubal commando Tantang Moses Maring (36) son of Tanthang Koning Maring of Pallel Langol village; then Rifleman of 3rd IRB attached to Thoubal commando Serto Tiken Kom (41) son of Jiten of Mantak village; and then Rifleman of 4th IRB attached to Thoubal commando Mangital Vaiphei (42) son of late Ngamjatong of Kamuching.
CJM Imphal East had directed all accused to appear before the court on May 18 but none could come to the court due to water logging in the court complex.
Accordingly, the court issued notices to the accused to appear on May 26 and fixed the day for hearing of the charges levelled against them by CBI in their charge sheet.
The charge sheet was submitted by CBI in the court of CJM Imphal East in August, 2018 after investigation of the case.
The Supreme Court directed CBI to investigate alleged fake encounter cases in connection with the writ petition filed by Extra Judicial Execution Victim Families Association (EEVFAM and HRA) in the apex court.
