Workshop on suicide prevention held

Imphal, June 21 2019:
National Mental Health Programme, National Health Mission, Manipur organised a one day State level workshop on "Suicide prevention" at Classic Grande, here, today.
At the event, Principal Secretary, Health and Family Welfare, V Vumlunmang said that suicide is a major public health problem and a leading cause of death in many countries.
"Even one life lost is too many," Vumlunmang said and added that collective effort of public, organisations and authorities concerned is needed to address the issue.

After launching National Mental Health Policy in 2014, Mental Health Care Act 2017 was passed in April 7 2017 to provide mental healthcare and services to those who are suffering from mental illness, Vumlunmang added underscoring the need to understand the major causes and reasons for suicide in the State and the country at large.
Vumlunmang also called for concrete measures to prevent suicide among students and youth by understanding the factors which are driving them to take such extreme actions.
Exam related stress among students and workplace related stress which often lead to suicide were also discussed at the event.
State Mission Director, NHM Manipur, Dr S Manikanta Singh and founder of Sneha Foundation Chennai, Lakshmi Vijayakumar also attended the programme.
According to the data published by the WHO, nearly 8,00,000 people die due to suicide every year, which is one person every 40 seconds.
Suicide is the second leading cause of death among 15-29-year-olds globally.
According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) 2015 data, one student commits suicide every hour in India.
