Handloom Exhibition kicks off at Chandel

Imphal, March 20 2013:
Participated by around 30 stalls showcasing a varieties of handloom and handicrafts products of Lambung Handloom Cluster, a district level handloom exhibition being organized by District Handloom and Textiles office, Chandel under the sponsorship of Directorate of Commerce and Industries, Manipur has kicked off from today at Mini Stadium, Chandel district headquarters.
The exhibition would continue till March 22 .
Inaugurating the exhibition as Chief Guest, Commissioner of Chandel Th.Chittaranjan Singh stressed on the need for promotion of Handloom and handicrafts products which could not only uplift the economy of the people but also help in promotion of our culture.
He observed that although Chandel may be poor in connectivity, but it one of the district wghich is very rich in culture and tradition.
K.Manihar Singh, District Sericulture Officer, Chandel presided over the function which was also attended by A.Shivdas Sharma, Sub-Divisional Officer, Chandel; M.Khelendra Singh, Project Manager (HL) District Handloom and Textile, Chandel and Shambhu Singh, Returning Officer of District Election Office as Guests of Honour.
Speaking to mediapersons on the sideline of the exhibition, Shimray Chon, President of Chandel Handloom and Handicraft Federation, which is the parent organization of Lambung Handloom Cluster Chandel, said that the exhibition is first of its kind organized at the district level but it's the third time for Lambung Handloom Cluster, Chandel.
Shimray Chon informed that even though there is great demand for handloom products, there is the problem of lack of trained weavers.
So, the Federation is planning to provide financial assistance in the form of loan to 250 weavers.
