Imphal, July 18 2013:
MLA of Tamenglong Constituency has appealed to the farmers and officials of Horticulture Department to increase orange production in Tamenglong district with an objective to uplift the economic condition of the State.
He was speaking on the occasion of distributing 7600 orange saplings of good variety to farmers under the Department of Horticulture and Soil Conservation at his official quarter at Babupara here today.
Janghemlung further said the farmers have been planting oranges in Tamenglong district since time immemorial.
The traditional orange production has been successful, but several orange plants were destroyed by an unknown disease in the recent years.
The orange saplings distributed to the farmers would obviously help to augment orange production in the district, he noted.
Deputy Director of Department of Horticulture and Soil Conservation Hafeezuddin, who is also in-charge of Orange Development Programme of Tamenglong district, said that the orange saplings were distributed to farmers under the scheme of Horticulture Mission in Northeast Region and Himalayan Region with assistance from National Research Centre for Citrus, Nagpur.
Horticulture Development Officers L Nilkumar, RK Roychand and H Ibomcha also imparted training to farmers on how to increase orange production by using new methods and technologies.
MLA Janghemlung also distributed insecticides and power sprayers to the farmers on the occasion.
