Overnight rain inundates swathes of valley area

Imphal, September 11, 2012:
Several residential pockets in the twin capital districts have been inundated following heavy downpour since the intervening night of September 10-11 till early morning today.
The recorded rainfall was pegged at 84.8 mm.
People could be seen wading through knee-deep water to attend to their daily chores even as reports have been received about some educational institutions declaring holiday for the day due to inundation.
During a random survey conducted by The Sangai Express it came to light that the flash-flood was mostly caused by clogged drains with local volunteers seen coming out with spades and pitchforks to clear the drains.
Even though the incessant rainfall is causing great inconveniences to a number of people, the problem is undoubtedly most severe at low-laying pockets of Thouda Bhabok Leikai and neighbouring areas along the Tiddim Road as the chronic problem of the Waisel Maril (drainage system) remains, as usual, unable to cope with sudden increase in the volume of rain-water.
Till the time of filing this report residents of Uripok, Keishampat, Sega Road (Tiddim Line), Wangkhei Khunou, Palace Compound, Khagempalli and Singjamei were still facing the hazards of water flooding their compound.
