Nambol MLA N Loken named MPCC interim president

AICC has appointed Nambol MLA Nameirakpam Loken as the interim president of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) on Saturday.
AICC Manipur in-charge Bhakta Charan Das and other party leaders have welcomed the decision of the AICC.
Attending a felicitation function organised for him at Congress Bhawan here on Saturday, MLA Loken said that it is beyond his imagination to get the responsibility of heading the party's state unit.
He then thanked AICC president Sonia Gandhi for entrusting him with the responsibility after party president MLA Govindas Konthoujam resigned from the post on July 19.Congress is the largest party in the country and he will play his part in bringing back the party into power in the state.
The state is waiting for the verdict of the Supreme Court on the 12 former parliamentary secretaries and if the apex court disqualifies them, the party will take up necessary steps to form a Congress government in the state, he said while urging for public support in order to bring about a steady government.
MLA Loken, born to late N Chandreshwar of Leimapok-pam Mayai Leikai on February 1, 1969, first got elected to the Manipur Legislative Assembly on MPP ticket in 1995.He was re-elected on INC ticket in 2002 and became the RD&PR minister.
He also won the elections in 2007, 2012 and 2017 on INC ticket and had been holding the post of vice-president of MPCC since 2016.Meanwhile, AICC leader BC Das, who also attended the felicitation function, said that the decision to appoint MLA Loken as the interim president was taken since it would take some time to appoint the party president.
He was chosen for his loyalty and commitment towards the party for several years and the party will rally under his leadership to overcome any challenges, he said.
CLP leader and former CM O Ibobi said that it was an auspicious day for the state as not only MLA Loken has been appointed as MPCC's interim president but also weightlifter Saikhom Mirabai Chanu won silver medal at Tokyo Olympic Games.
The party congratulates her on her achievement and honours her family for raising such a strong-willed sportsperson, he said and affirmed that the party will work under the leadership of MLA Loken to overcome any challenges.
AICC CWC member Gaikhangam also welcomed the decision and expressed belief that the party will get new strength under his leadership.
He also congratulated Mirabai on her achievement and expressed belief that many more world class sportspersons will emerge from the soil of Manipur.
Similarly, senior party leader TN Haokip welcomed the decision of appointing N Loken as the interim president of the state Congress unit and appealed to all the party members to work unitedly under his leadership to strengthen the party from the grassroots.
Congress MLAs, MPCC office bearers and leaders of frontals and cells were also present during the felicitation function.
