State students assaulted at ICFAI campus, Tripura

In an alleged incident of ragging at the campus of ICFAI University in Tripura, 11 students hailing from Manipur were beaten up black and blue by a large number of students from Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh.
Some of the severely injured students have been admitted to GB Hospital, Tripura for treatment.
According to sources, the third semester students of the University organized a fresher's party for the newly admitted students on August 9.A confrontation ensued over drinking of beer by some students from Meghalaya to which the students from Manipur protested.
Later, at around 1 am on the same day, a large number of students armed with sticks and iron rods barged into the rooms of Manipuri students and thrashed them severely.
In the aftermath of the incident, the students of both parties came to an understanding with the intervention of the Registrar of the University yesterday.
However, students from Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh again attacked the Manipuri students outside the campus while they were coming out of Registrar's quarter along with the teachers.
Yoihenba of Thoubal, Jackiechan of Keishampat and Vikas of Haobam Marak were among who are seriously injured.
Personnel of Tripura Police guarded the University Campus while the Manipuri students stayed at the Registrar's quarter and hospital.
About 85 Manipuri students are studying at ICFAI University, but they are now being threatened by the students from other north-eastern states.
Meanwhile, parents and guardians of Manipuri students have written to State's Education Minister and Home Minister to ensure their safety at the University campus.
