Chandel tensed over arrest of student leaders

Two student leaders have been arrested by the police today on alleged charge of torching the Maha Union Government Higher Secondary School on the night of August 15.President of Anal Lenruwl Tangpi (Anal Students' Union) Ps Monihring Anal and President of Sirti Thimzii Ruh ( Monsang Students' Union ) Ng.
Kalenchung Monsang were arrested by the Chandel Police from Chandel around 11:00 am today.
Meanwhile, condemning the arrest, Naga Students' Union, Chandel (NSUC) has announced 48-hour total bandh in Chandel with effect from midnight today.
The decision to impose the total bandh was reportedly taken during a joint meeting attended by leaders of various CSOs.
Demanding releasing of the two arrested student leaders within 24 hours unconditionally, NSUC has also asserted that no arrest warrant
had been issued.
Soon after the news of the arrest spread, many student volunteers came out to the street of Chandel Bazar and forced the shopkeepers to down their shutters.
The agitated student volunteers also burned tubes and tyres in the middle of the road to prevent vehicular movements.
ATSUM president Muan Tombing has also condemned the arrest incident saying the police have no proof that these student leaders were involved in the torching of the school.
