Imphal, July 22 2011:
Member of National Commission for Women, Wanshuk Shyam, yesterday paid a visit to women prisoners lodged in Central Jail in Imphal and found that the women prisoners appeared very depressed.
Shyam who was here in the state yesterday for a day visited the women cell of Central Jail and emerged with a complaint that the prisoners appeared very depressed, said an official of Manipur State Women Commission to Newmai News Network.
The national commission member was here particularly to review the condition of the 46 women prisoners lodged in Central Jail in Imphal and to interact with them regarding the basic facilities being provided to the incarcerated women.
"The women prisoners appeared very depressed.
The jail authorities should try and bring the prisoners out of the perceived depression," Shyam was quoted as saying by a state official.
After interacting with the women prisoners the visiting NCW member reportedly directed the in-house doctors and jail authorities to provide healthy and nutritious food along with regular medical checks to the prisoners.
Vocational training facilities should be provided to the women prisoners in an attempt to engage them meaningfully and to heal them of their depression, Shyam said before leaving the state and after assuring a revisit.
