Imphal, May 18 2021:
Rongmei Naga Students' Organisation Manipur (RNSOM) has urged banks, private money lenders and landlords of the state to exempt and waive any form of rent, interests from the tenants and debtors during the present Covid-19 situation.
The Organisation also appealed to the valley-based student organisations to extend co-operation and ensure implementation of its proposal.
In a release, RNSOM general secretary Jeanthui Panmei also drew attention of the government to accord priority in the matter for the welfare of the people.
The people of the state especially the student community from hill districts are facing double challenges since most of the parents are marginal farmers, daily wage earners and doing small business who earn their livelihood with capital borrowed from the private banks and other money lenders.
They are now facing serious problems due to the sudden imposition of public curfew and total lockdown by the state government to contain the spread of the second wave of Covid-19, thereby bringing complete halt to their source of livelihood, it noted.
RNSOM also pointed out that taking advantage of the current situation of lockdown, many traders and shopkeepers have created fake scarcity and intentionally hiked prices of essential commodities like rice, pulses, oil etc., leaving many families to face the heat even more.
State government must closely monitor such malpractices before the CSOs take law into their hands, it demanded.
The students' body further raised concern over the malpractices of rice distribution system last year at various parts of the state amidst the nationwide lockdown and asked the government to strictly monitor the department concern and agents, along with taking necessary measure ensuring fair and equal distribution across the state to the rightful beneficiaries.
