Imphal, July 10 2017:
The houses and fields of Nongpok Centre (Sualamphai) village, lying between Kangpokpi and Thoubal districts, have been flooded due to damages in the small dam built over the Kakmayai river.
Speaking to media persons, the chief of Nongpok Centre, James Vaiphei said that in the past few years, several areas of the villages including the funeral ground have sunk due to the force of the river.
He pointed out that during rainy seasons, the increasing water level of the river often damages the crops, fields and properties present in the left side of the dam.
He also expressed fear that the river may also flood the crops and fields located atNingel and Yairipok Kakmayai.
The Kakmayai river begins near Phailenjang village and merges with Thoubal river.
The small dam in the river was constructed during the 1970s but began developing cracks after some years.
Although some repairing works were done, the authority concerned stopped maintenance after some time thus resulting in all the hardships, he added.
James appealed to the State Government to take up necessary actions to repair the damages to the dam and to strengthen the left river banks using RCC.
The villagers have to bear huge expense for using excavator to clean the fields and the river side during the rainy seasons, he added.
