17th Fish Farmers' Day observed

Imphal, July 10 2017:
With the objective to reduce the huge supply-demand gap pertaining to fish production in the State, the Government will strive to set up fishing industries in the State .
This was stated by T Robindro, MLA and Chairman, Planning and Development Authority while speaking as the chief guest of the 17th Fish Farmers’ Day organised by Fisheries Dept today at Directorate of Fisheries, Lamphelpat .
Robindro said that fish consumption in Manipur is higher than in other States.
The present annual requirement (demand) of fish in the State is about 42 MT against the current production (supply) of about 32 MT .
With the target to bridge the demand-supply gap, the State Govt will work on to set up fishing industries, he said .
He said fish production in the State should be augmented by using scientific technology to meet the demand of the rising population .
The State or society cannot survive without farmers.
Therefore, all concerned should create the needed working environment for the farmers, Robindro said .
He further said that the authority concerned has been working on a huge project after due deliberations to promote fish farmers of the State .
Robindro also said that the recent spate of rivers that caused floods in the State was a loss both for the fish farmers and people .
Robindro also promised that he would donate his (MLA) one month salary for the welfare of the fish farmers .
The programme was attended amongst others by David K Shimray, Director of Fisheries as the president.
Speaking at the occasion, David expressed sympathy to fish farmers whose farms were ruined in the floods .
On the occasion, prizes were also presented to winners of last year’s Fish Fair cum Fish Crop Competition .
T Raghu Singh of Thanga Tongbram, winner of the main fish crop prize, who produced 16,054 kg of fish was presented a cash reward of Rs 1 lakh while 2nd prize winner in the competition H Rabi of Keirenphabi was presented Rs 70,000.Third prize winner N Basanta of Keibul was presented Rs 50,000 .
H Rabi was also adjudged winner for indigenous fish producer and was presented Rs 20,000 .
Consolation prize of Rs 7000 each was presented to 25 fish farmer.
