Imphal, January 06 2013 :
The main objective of zero garbage programme of Imphal Municipal Council (IMC) is to make the city a better place to live.
However, due to shortage of manpower and time as well as transportation problem, it would be difficult to achieve the target of zero garbage in Imphal, Nepram Gitkumar, Director of MAHUD, Government of Manipur has stated.
Gitkumar was speaking at an awareness programme on Ward Development Committee (WDC) of Sagolband Assembly constituency's Ward No 8 at Wahengbam Leikai Yumjao Lairenbi Community Hall on Sunday.
The MAHUD Director went on to say that in order to miminise the difficulty, IMC has inducted bell-ringing vehicles to pick garbage from every household.
These bell-ringing vehicles are more suitable for our road system.
Highlighting the benefits under Swarna Jayanti Sahari Rozgar Yojana (SJSRY) to all the WDC members, the MAHUD Director informed that the department would launch a new self-help group scheme from next month and it would be implemented through WDCs at local level.
Executive Officer of IMC W Rajen Singh, who spoke on 'the role of IMC in Ward Development Committee' as a resource person, said that WDC are the eyes and ears of local residents.
So, members need to be very sensitive and keep in touch with MAHUD department for timely implementation of development works in their respective area.
Since the last decade, the city has been growing in a positive way and phenomenally the numbers of people are also increasing, thus, adding onus to IMC officials to pick more garbage.
IMC alone could not make the city clean without active participation from WDC and each individual residing in Imphal, he added.
President of Young Socio Cultural Union (YSCU), Wahengbam Leikai, Mongjam Lalinkumar, who attended the awareness programme as guest of honour, assured that YSCU would extend its full support for successful implementation of SJSRY and other schemes in the area.
Meanwhile, in a simple function at the same venue, members of YSCU elected its office bearers and paid floral tribute to 5 local Meira Paibis who died recently.
