Imphal, September 29 2014 :
The younger lots in Ukhrul on the occasion of the international day for older persons have resolved to take time to say "thank you" to their parents and elders with a special event of feast and gifts on Wednesday.
More than 1000 elders from different nook and cranny of Ukhrul will gathered at the town hall on the occasion of the international day for older persons an event organized for the first time to celebrate how people can grow old gracefully.
The observance will be made by Service for Elders, a mission programme of Compassion in Action Ministries (CIAMs) under the Centre for Health Services and Research Centre (CHSRC) .
For the olds, the event would not only be about gifts and feast.
It would be a special moment too for them on October 1, to meet and embrace long departed friends.
The elders have also arranged a free taxi cards for selected elders on the occasion all thanks to Ukhrul District Taxi Association.
Many well wishers have contributed financially and materially towards the cause, while the District Administration has agreed to extend partial sponsorship.
"The event is to reaffirm our faith, love and respect for the elders," said CIAMs project officer Ngalengpam Ruivah.
The observance of this special day, the organizers feel, is to infuse respect for old age among the younger people.
The programme is being focused on 60-plus persons an outcome of CIAMs' 10-year initiative.
Further, the organizers said the event is expected to get more support in days to come from Tangkhul churches.
It was informed that Tangkhul Naga Baptist Churches and Tangkhul Baptist Churches Association have agreed in principle to observe the day on annual basis.
In the last 10 years, the CIAMs have met and consulted over 700 elders in the district.
They have listened to their stories of feeling isolated and shared their concerns.
An organizing member Aran Chihui appeals, "on the occasion, let's take the time to say thank you to our aging parents" .
