Imphal, September 24 2014:
Manipur People's Party (MPP) said the upcoming crucial Hiyanglam-by poll could be a turning point for the party, admitting that regional political parties based on 'regionalism' have been gaining ground across the country.
"The crucial Hiyanglam by-poll scheduled for October 17 could be a turning point for MPP," party president N Sovakiran said while giving nomination form to party candidate Mayengbam Amutombi at MPP office.
The by-poll has been necessitated following the death of Hiyanglam constituency sitting MLA M Kunjo.
Sovakiran evoked the recent Bihar assembly election in which regional parties won a thumping victory.
He also mentioned the Congress debacle in the recent national elections and noted that the Congress could not get leader of opposition post as it managed to get only 44 seats in the Lok Sabha elections.
Sovakiran said the true patriotism emanates from regionalism, and that only the regional parties can accomplish all essential activities for developing a state.
Saying that MPP is always committed to solving every issue through political means, the MPP president appealed to the electorate in Hiyanglam to stop giving vote to national political parties in the upcoming by-poll and sought vote for party candidate Amutombi.
