Imphal, September 24 2014:
A one day awareness programme on 'Neeshana Khunaida Peeba Cheitheng Amadi Mashibu Thingbada Meeyamna Lougadaba Thoudang' was held at Wangjing Hodamba Community Hall jointly organised by the Coalition Against Drugs and Alcohol (CADA) and Wangjing Hodamba Meira Paibee today, according to a press release issued by L Sanjit, secretary information and publicity, CADA.
The presidium members of the awareness programme were, president of CADA Advocate Yumnam Ratan, president of Wangjing Hodam Meira Paibee Aheibam (O) Muhi, assistant secretary general of Wangjing Hodam Meira Paibee Soibam (O) Dasumati, senior citizen of Wangjing Hodamaba Naorem Khamba and Naorem Lukhoi.
Speaking as the spokesperson of the programme, Ningthoujam Doren said that alcohol and drug abuse are the root cause for the ills dogging society in Manipur.
Lamenting on the present condition of the deteriorating society of Manipur, Doren further asserted that good becomes evil due to the bad habit of such intoxicants.
"We have heard news of husband killing his wife, rapes, murders and other crimes.
All these crimes have been triggered by such intoxicants as their thirst to get what they want blind them to everything.
Therefore, it is mandatory to root-out such intoxicants from our society by adopting a way or the other", he added.
Unfortunately, the steps taken up by the meira paibees in the past to ban all intoxicants from the Manipuri society failed due to lack of integrity.
Some members of the prohibitors indulged themselves in buying and selling of such items.
Some even could not stop consuming it, he alleged.
Pledging to root-out alcohol and drug abuse in Manipur while speaking at the occasion, Aheibam Muhi, Khundongbam Anand and advocate Yumnam Ratan mentioned some crucial elements which are causing degradation of society.
Apart from alcohol, tobacco and other drugs impacting on the society, the people who are selling these toxic items are the biggest enemies of society.
The speakers also stated that the people of Manipur must understand that the non-locals who hold the biggest market of such toxic items are the ones who would earn benefits and leave the people of Manipur with incurable diseases like cancer.
The womenfolk of Manipur have been behind certain legendary events in which they have always saved the integrity of Manipur.
It is time again to strongly stand against the evil elements of society, the speakers declared.
