Imphal, June 14 2017:
Taking strong exception to the recent media reports about subjecting one individual to inhuman, third degree torture for two consecutive days, the Working Committee of the Apunba Lup (WCAL) has called for an immediate halt to such torture.
While condemning in the strongest term the third degree torture meted out to Wareppam Basanta (44) s/o W Apabi of Langol Type-2 by troops of 34 Assam Rifles, a statement issued by WCAL has urged the Government to award exemplary punishment to all the AR personnel and other individuals involved in torturing W Basanta.
Such inhuman torture meted out to W Basanta violates the Indian Constitution as well as many international laws.
Notably, India has already ratified the Geneva Convention.
Even though AFSPA is in force in Manipur, 34 AR defied the Supreme Court's dos and don'ts issued with regard to exercising the provisions of the infamous Act by subjecting Basanta to such horrendous treatment.
The State Government ought to take up stringent action against 34 AR, Maram.
The Government should also take up adequate security measures for Basanta and his family for they have fled their home for fear of life.
Henceforth, 34 AR, Maram should be held responsible for any untoward incident that happens to Basanta and his family, WCAL asserted.
