Imphal, January 09 2020:
Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) has levelled allegations at former HoD of Physics Department, Manipur University Professor S Dorendrajit accusing him of misappropriating funds to the tune of Rs 43 lakh which were sanctioned by the University Grants Commission (UGC) for opening a one year PG course in Advance Material.
Speaking to media persons at DESAM head office at Kwakeithel today, its assistant general secretary Leishangthem Lamyanba said that DESAM has been monitoring alleged corrupt practices going on inside the university from time to time in a bid to prevent such acts and to expose the scams.
As a part of its investigation, DESAM found out about a scam of Rs 43 lakh in the Physics Department.
Dorendrajit is the former HoD of Physics Department, he claimed.
Lamyanba explained that in September of 2009, UGC approved a fund of Rs 60 lakh to Manipur University for starting a PG diploma course in Advance Studies at the Department of Physics, for a period of 5 years (from April 1, 2010 to March 31, 2015) with an intake capacity of 10 students annually.
In 2010, UGC released a sanctioned amount of Rs 43 lakh for purchasing the required materials and the Coordinator of the PG diploma course in Advanced Studies was Professor S Dorendrajit, he alleged, adding that Dorendrajit misused the fund instead of purchasing the required equipments and as such, the PG diploma course could not proceed any further in the university.
Lamyanba continued that Dorendrajit also failed to submit the utilization certificate, statement of the expenditure and progress report of the PG course in connection with the grant of Rs 43 lakh and due to this, UGC stopped releasing the remaining amount in 2017.UGC, the same year, categorically stated that as the PG diploma course was not implemented, the university must refund the entire sanctioned amount along with interest, Lamyanba lamented adding that DESAM is totally against such unethical practices.
He further appealed the Manipur University authorities to take up appropriate actions against the individual so
as to set an example.
