Imphal, January 09 2020:
Over half of the historic Thong Nambonbi (hump bridge) of Khwairamband Keithel broke apart last night.
Notably, the bridge was built by British engineers during the reign of Maharaj Chandrakirti in 1854 .
The bridge was closed since July last year after big rounded portion caved in on the western side.
For the second time, a big portion of the bridge broke down on the southern side yesterday.
A team of officials led by Art and Culture Minister L Jayantakumar inspected the condition of the hump bridge today.

The team also included Art and Culture Commissioner M Joy, Art and Culture Director A Shivdas and State Archeology Superintendent Shasikanta Sharma.
The bridge is protected under the Manipur Ancient and Historical Monuments and Archeological Sites and Remains Act 1976 .
Art and Culture Department today talked with the Archeological Survey of India about repairing/re-constructing the bridge.
Chief Minister N Biren would send an intimation to the Ministry concerned on the matter tomorrow.
Sources said that the bridge would be repaired using only those materials/components used in its construction.
