Imphal, September 24 2012:
Demanding their service protection and payment of wages for Sundays, drivers and handymen of the Semi-Low Floor Buses which have been sanctioned under JnNURM stopped their service compelling a complete halt on ferrying passengers in the State today.
With the State Government all set to transfer the operation of Semi-Low Floor Buses, which have been plying on the roads of Imphal for the last seven months on trial basis, to some private firms, the drivers and handymen are worried over their job security.
So, they have raised the demand for giving service protections and wages for service on Sundays as well.
As soon as the news of the non-plying of the buses on the roads reached, the Transport Director and DSP (Traffic) had a meeting with the agitating drivers and handymen and assured them that, if at all, the operation of Semi-Low Floor Buses is to be transferred to private firms, their service protection would be further ensured and wages for Sundays will be included in their monthly salaries.
Though an understanding was finally brought about between the agitators and the authorities concerned, the bus service for the day remained cancelled.
It may be mentioned that a recent meeting of UMTA decided to hand over the operation of the bus service to some private firms.
The transfer of these buses is to be carried out through floating of tenders.
