MDAVO urges Govt to stop Mapithel Dam construction

Imphal, February 28 2015 :
Mapithel Dam Affected Villages Organization (MDAVO) on Saturday submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister of Manipur urging him to stop construction of Mapithel Dam and refrain from blocking of Thoubal River.
In the memorandum, MDAVO demanded the State Government to stop blocking of Thoubal River till rehabilitation process acceptable to all affected communities is fully ensured and also stop construction of Mapithel Dam till all unresolved pending issues of affected communities are settled amicably.
The Organization also urged the State Government to resume its Expert Review Committee set up in 2008 and put an immediate halt to all militarization process that supports Mapithel Dam construction.
MDAVO further pressed the State Government to stop all forms of involuntary displacement of indigenous people affected by Mapithel Dam in the State as per UN Declaration on Indigenous People's Rights, 2007 .
The Mapithel Dam should also adhere to recommendations of the World Commission on Dams, 2000, MDAVO appealed to the State Government.
