Imphal, July 07 2026:
The Meitei Society, Churachandpur has appealed to the Government to immediately release the arrested members of Arambai Tenggol without any conditions and refrain from carrying out further arrests or detentions.
In a statement, the organisation described Arambai Tenggol as a sociocultural revivalist organisation that initially worked for the welfare of the people.
It stated that following the outbreak of ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities on May 3, 2023, the organisation took up arms to protect the people and safeguard the territorial integrity of Manipur.
The society further claimed that on February 25, 2025, representatives of Arambai Tenggol met then Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, during which they were reportedly assured that no action would be taken against members if they surrendered their weapons and that a general amnesty would be granted.
According to the release, acting on the assurance, members of Arambai Tenggol surrendered the arms in their possession to the Government on February 27, 2025.However, the society alleged that despite the reported understanding, Arambai Tenggol members have continued to face arrests and detention on various charges, which it termed unfortunate and contrary to the assurance given during the meeting.
The Meitei Society, Churachandpur, therefore urged the concerned authorities to immediately release the arrested Arambai Tenggol members and refrain from making any further arrests or detentions.
