Imphal, August 09 2009:
The little children of Parbung village may first see the glow of electric light for the first time in their live thanks to the effort of an elderly villager, Thangchunghnung.
Twenty moons have passed since this interior village in Churachandpur, located around 260 kilometres far from Imphal, has been living under the dark - in the absence of electricity.
Before this, the villagers had a diesel engine mechanised Power House in the village.
Since the break-down of the Power House twenty years ago, the villagers have no slightest hope that their village will ever be electrified again.
However, the efforts of a 73 year old villager, Thangchunghnung son of (L) Kap-a is now going to keep the village shining under electric glow.
He has invented a new idea to generate power from the Bongshat rivulet using dynamo.
One of the southernmost villages of the state, Parbung village has 504 houses with a population of a little over 3,100.The village remains isolated from the rest of the state due to lack of communication facility.
The village needs around 100 kilowatt on an average.
On August 1, the invention of the village elder was experimented.
As a trial, the SDO Office and the SDO quarters were lighted up with the new invention.
Seeing the glow, villagers have the enthusiasm to have it in their respective households.
Since the Bongshat rivulet is not capable of generating more power to meet the needs of the villagers, the elderly villager has decided to use larger dynamo.
He said the power will also be generated from bigger source of water - the Phaiva Lake.
Interacting with this reporter, Thangchunghnung said his invention will enable uninterrupted power supply to the whole village as the river water is flowing throughout the years.
He said his device will be most beneficial to school going children of the village.
It will also be helpful to the entire villagers as they will have that chance to take a break in front of TVs, etc.
His most sense of accomplishment would be, according to Thangchunghnung, that the children would be practically shown what 'electricity' is.
