The fifth edition of Kanglei Ningon Khudon Mela, organized by the Apunba Kanglei Sinaibi Lup (AKSIL), will be held GM Hall beginning from October 28. The fair will continue till November 7 .
Addressing a press conference, AKSIL president Th Gomti Leima said the fair has been held since 2006 with the objective of attracting people of the state, particularly women to indigenous handloom products during "Ningol Chakouba".
It also related with appealing to the people to leave the habit of using imported items, she added.
In this fifth edition of the fair, a total of 65 stalls will be opened at the fair venue and they are targeting to sell locally produced handloom items worth Rs 70 lakh to Rs 80 lakh.
They had been able to sell these items worth Rs 50,86,351 in the fourth edition of the fair held in 2009 in which 76 stalls were opened.
Observing a gradual increase in the popularity of the fair usually held ahead of Ningol Chakkouba, the president recalled that in the first edition of the fair in 2006, they sold Rs 14,67,761 lakh worth of local handloom products by opening 49 stalls.
It was increased to Rs 23,31,988 in the second edition and to Rs 34,84,766 in third edition.
The demand of indigenous handloom products is increasing and considering the demands, AKSIL is making an effort to invent new designs which would attract customers.
Another objective of organizing the fair is to create a market for the locally produced handloom items, the president added.
