Govt trying relentlessly to announce ODF Manipur in October: PHED

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin) on October 2,2014, with an aim to provide sanitary latrines at every household.
Following the mission, the State Government has also set its target to complete the construction of 4,48,648 sanitary latrines at every household in the State and to declare Manipur as an Open Defecation Free State on October 2.An official source of the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) has informed The Sangai Express, that, regarding the Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin), Manipur had planned to build 4,48,648 sanitary latrines under the Department, following a base line survey conducted in 2012.A total of 3,87,110 sanitary latrines have been constructed while the Govt is aiming to complete the construction of the remaining 61,538 latrines within the first week of October in order to announce Manipur an ODF State.
Briefing the details of the finished sanitary latrines, the official further stated that 35,843 sanitary latrines have been constructed in Bishnupur district while 42,625 sanitary latrines have been constructed in Senapati district, as planned.
Both the districts have no house without a sanitary latrine in them, the source claimed.
The Govt has also announced ODF at these two districts.
Meanwhile, in Chandel district, only 755 sanitary latrines are yet to be built out of the total target of 12,905 and 5681 sanitary latrines are yet to built out of 42,520 target in Churachandpur district.
Out of the total 72,888 sanitary latrines set to built in Imphal East District, only 9498 are left unfinished while, 38,194 sanitary latrines have been constructed and 11,632 are yet to be built in Imphal West, the source further claimed.
The completed number of sanitary latrines in the remaining districts are 4631 in Jiribam (out of 7272), 17,643 in Kakching (out of 20,287), 8262 in Kamjong (out of 11,353), 29,351 in Kangpokpi (out of 32,327), 10,284 in Noney (out of 11,492), 6721 in Pherzawl (out of 8005), 14,142 in Tamenglong (out of 16,511), 10,038 in Tengnoupal (out of 11,474), 37,480 in Thoubal (out of 42,320) and 19,517 in Ukhrul out of 31,000.The official source of PHED further claimed that, in order to implement thescheme, a sum of Rs 17280 crore was sanctioned in parts during the years 2014-15, 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2018-19.It further claimed that a sum of Rs 10,800 is sanctioned by the Central Govt while a sum of Rs 1,200 is contributed by the State Govt for the constriction of one sanitary latrine.
To make the Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin) successful , a Village Water and Sanitation Committee comprising of official of PHED was formed for each area, to monitor the construction work, it said.
Considering the numerous health hazardous of defecating in open space, the mission would prevent many diseases and in turn make the State cleaner and healthier.
The source further informed that various activities including awareness programmes, events, competitions, mass rally etc for students and locals have been organised across the State to spread better understanding and awareness about the hazardous impacts of open defecation and necessity of building a sanitary latrine at every household.
