Imphal, June 07 2018:
Even as DESAM has called off their agitation over the status of National Sports University, (NSU) Manipur main campus following an understanding with the State Government, the students' body has pledged to re-launch different modes of agitation until three key courses which the authorities have been planning to open at outlying campuses are opened at the main campus within the current academic year.
Speaking to media persons at their Sagolband Moirang Leirak office today, DESAM president Salam Akash said that they submitted a memorandum to the Government earlier stating that no outlying campuses should be opened until the main campus is made full fledged with all necessary infrastructure and manpower.
DESAM was compelled to intensify its agitation after the authorities fixed June 11 for conducting an interview for recruitment of faculty members of Sports Journalism, Sports Management and Sports Performance Analysis courses at the Lucknow campus.
Even though the scheduled interview has been postponed on account of the agitation, DESAM is not yet satisfied, Akash said.
The whole initiative of opening the three key courses at outlying campuses should be aborted, and the State Government and the Government of India should give a concrete assurance to the people of Manipur that the three courses would be opened at the main campus, he demanded.
If the three key courses are not opened at the main campus within the current academic session, DESAM would launch different modes of intense agitation, he said and appealed to all concerned to ensure that the three key courses are opened in Manipur at the earliest.
DESAM vice-president Edison Nameirakpam said that Manipur was selected for establishment of NSU as an acknowledgement of the contributions given by Manipuri players to the country.
A permanent office of VC should be opened in Manipur.
Noting that all other States have keen interest to open the university in their respective States, the Government of Manipur must pay special attention and ensure that it is a full fledged university.
Meanwhile, six volunteers of DESAM arrested by police in the course of the agitation now called off were released today.
